Farmers, solid waste and energy professionals, agency staff, policy makers and other interested individuals are invited to attend this event on advanced composting practices of compost aeration and heat recovery (CAHR). Presentations on the economics, technologies and impact of composting and compost use from:
- Matt Smith, Ph.D., University of New Hampshire’s Organic Dairy Research Farm
- Robert Foster, VT Natural Ag Products
- Brian Jerose, Agrilab Technologies Inc.
- Juan Alvez, Ph.D. , UVM Center for Sustainable Agriculture
The presentations will be followed by a guided tour at the Foster family’s VT Natural AgProducts (VNAP) composting facility, featuring the CAHR systems installed in 2016 and 2017. VNAP makes Moo Doo and other compost and soil products.
The CAHR systems at VT Natural Ag Products improved compost process efficiency and reduced fossil fuel consumption. Renewable thermal energy is generated and utilized on site using the CAHR systems. The site operators and technical partners will describe the design, construction, operating details and lessons learned. Cost-share funding for the projects have been provided by USDA Rural Development – Rural Energy for America Program, VT Clean Energy Development Fund and the Closed Loop Foundation with support of the Walmart Foundation. Site tours are on a guided basis only.
