The ACoRN initiative to develop cooperative,
community-owned projects for satisfying Addison County's
renewable-energy needs has three areas of focus: Retail, Biofuels,
and Power.
Retail
The
ACoRN group has identified a basic need in Addison County for improved access to affordable
renewable-energy products for the home or small business. The purpose of a retail co-op (or retail
component of a broader cooperative) will be to aggregate consumer demand and
purchase renewable-energy products - such as solar panels, small wind turbines,
biomass burners, solar hot waters systems, and efficient appliances - in bulk in
order to make them more affordable to individual homeowners and small
businesses. However, a retail co-op
will also provide important services to members, such as: providing information
on different renewable/efficient technologies, promoting energy conservation,
providing technical expertise and advice, and conducting outreach and education
about alternative-energy solutions.

Biofuels
Similar to a retail co-op, the biofuels co-op (or component
of a broader cooperative) will be to aggregate demand in order to supply biomass
and biofuels to Addison County residents at an affordable
price. Furthermore, the objective
of a biofuels co-op will be to promote LOCAL production of sustainable biomass,
biofuels, and co-products.

Power
The purpose of a Power co-op will be to promote the
development of LOCALLY and cooperatively-owned projects for generating renewable
electricity in Addison County.
